Every December, our phones get busy. Patients realize they have unused dental benefits that disappear on December 31, and the remaining appointment slots fill up fast. If you live in Avon, Plainfield, Brownsburg or anywhere in Hendricks County, now is a smart time to check what your plan still covers.
How Dental Insurance Resets Work
Most dental plans run on a calendar year. Your annual maximum is the total amount the plan will pay in a year, and it usually falls between $1,000 and $2,000. Unused amounts do not roll over. The same applies to your deductible: if you have already met it this year, any treatment you finish before December 31 costs you less than the same treatment in January, when the deductible starts again.
What You Can Still Get Done This Year
- Cleanings and exams. Most plans cover two preventive visits a year, often at 100%.
- Fillings. A small cavity treated now is usually far cheaper than a root canal later.
- Crowns. If a crown was recommended earlier this year, finishing it before your benefits reset can save you a lot.
- Gum treatment. Periodontal care is easier to manage when it isn’t postponed.
FSA and HSA Funds Count Too
Many employers in the Indianapolis area offer a Flexible Spending Account. FSA money is often “use it or lose it,” with only a short grace period or a limited carryover depending on your plan. Dental work is an eligible expense, so it is one of the most practical ways to use the balance. HSA funds don’t expire, but they still work well for planned treatment.
